During the night our brain regenerates. That is why an infant sleep more. The baby must develop his/her brain. But why do we need sleep?
This is a question that has baffled scientists for centuries and the answer is, no one is sure. Some believe that resting time is important for the body as it is a sort of general maintenance, during which important hormones as for example the growth hormones are secreted.
Neurophysiologists have discovered that sleep Is useful for the brain to “build itself”: neuronal activity during REM sleep (phase during which you dream) would stimulate the formation of the cerebral circuits and some structures of the cerebral cortex, which are inactive during waking.
In fact, 50% of infant sleep (which last 14 out of 24 hours) is characterized by a big electrical activity of the brain and by dreams. Sleep seems to be important for memory.

Often to answer some questions or recover information, we move the eyes backwards as we were looking for it at an angle of our mental files. This is what happens during REM, characterized by rapid eye movements, which are connected to the research and elaboration of information during the day.
